What? Another New Technical Term?

17 September, 2009

I thought I had heard almost everything when it came to the Internet, phone, and cable TV service deals. Then I came upon an entirely unfamiliar term; FiOS. What is that, fidelity outer space? I had just gotten caught up on all the other lingo that involves these service bundles, and now I had to figure out another one? You can never keep up with whatever will come next.

So in doing a little research, I find that FiOS stands for fiber optic system. You can have a FiOS TV and Internet services. So basically it's having your own fiber optic system in your home. Yes, we now have more competition when it comes to faster services in Internet and more options for your TV. As if we didn't already have enough to figure out!

Why Get FiOS?

22 July, 2009

Verizon offers more than standard television and high speed Internet service. In select markets, customers can upgrade to fiber-optic technology that Verizon has dubbed ‘FiOS.’ What is so great about fiber-optic TV and Internet? Instead of relying on satellite signals or copper wires to deliver communication and entertainment services, fiber-optic systems are utilized. These systems are capable of delivering more reliable service for a wide variety of uses, including telecommuting, video on demand, home shopping and interactive content. In addition, fiber-optic technology is less susceptible to interference from changing weather conditions.

With FiOS, Verizon offers Internet speeds up to 50 Mbps; choose from more than 100 HD television channels, with no unsightly satellite dish to deface your home. FiOS TV services offers a Home Media DVR, which allows subscribers to record up to 80 hours of content that can be accessed in multiple rooms of your home. Why pay for additional DVRs, when you can get a multi-room DVR from Verizon?

Social Networking via TV

21 July, 2009

With more than 250 million people actively using Facebook worldwide, and given the rising popularity of Twitter, it seems only natural that Verizon would find a way to integrate social media into its FiOS TV service. Now users of this widely popular fiber-optic television service can take advantage of online social networking not only on their computers and mobile phones, but on their television sets. Thanks to the Widget Bazaar app store and Internet Video on TV, users will be able to see friends’ Facebook photo albums and status updates in real-time.

Verizon FiOS customers who are avid Twitterers will be able to watch television while following Tweets that pertain to the specific TV program, event or movie they’re tuned into. Reportedly, Verizon offers these widgets at no additional cost. In addition, Verizon deals that feature DVR service will also include a great Internet Video feature, allowing the user to access online videos from websites including Veoh, Dailymotion and blip.tv.

Bundles Save Money

15 July, 2009

It’s no secret that Verizon operates the most expansive wireless network in America, serving nearly 90 million individuals in the United States. How do the company’s home phone and Internet services compare to the competition?

Verizon offers several types of voice service, including VoIP, traditional and fiber-optic in select areas. High speed Internet from Verizon is typically delivered via DSL technology, but fiber-optic Internet is available in some areas. Verizon bundles featuring high-speed Internet (DSL) and unlimited local calling start at just $32.09 per month! How many providers do you know that offer two great services for less than $35 per month?

If you want to include long distance calling, increase your Internet speeds by 2 Mbps and add DIRECTV service, Verizon offers a great bundle for less than $100 per month! This package delivers more than 150 digital quality-TV channels, four popular calling features and unlimited local and long distance voice service. Save money, and bundle services with Verizon!

Last week, Verizon Business announced that it signed an agreement with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Verizon will be paid up to $245 million for providing the HHS with telecommunication services including audio, video and Web conferencing; dedicated voice mail; and voice and data services through 2015. This is the third governmental contract that Verizon Business has been awarded in 2009.
