Verizon Named Top Company for Multicultural Women

27 May, 2009

New York-based Verizon has been recognized by Working Mother magazine as one of the Best Companies for Multicultural Women for the fourth consecutive year. The magazine's list provides a detailed look at corporations that are continuously benefitting from the skills of multicultural women in professional settings.

Applicants provided Working Mother magazine with critical data points, in order to be considered for the list of Best Companies for Multicultural Women. For this year's list, the most important factors were development, representation, training and advancement of multicultural women.

Verizon's Southeast Region President, Michelle Robinson, will be featured in Working Mother's June/July 2009 issue. In early 2009, Vice President for National Enterprise Sales and Distribution for Verizon Wireless, Rose Kirk, was honored as Working 'other of the Year' by Working Mother magazine.

Women play integral roles in developing and operating Verizon's global IP and advanced broadband networks, holding critical positions including Senior Vice President of Network Program Management, and Senior Vice President of Global Engineering and Planning. Women account for 28% of Verizon's senior management jobs. Additionally, women and minorities hold almost 60% of the company's positions.

"Creating an environment where all employees can thrive is essential to a company's success," said Carol Evans, President of Working Mother Media. "Each Best Company for Multicultural Women demonstrates commitment to diversity by putting its money where its mouth is - through key programs and practices. However, there's still a long way to go. The Best Companies are leading the way, but others need to strengthen initiatives for women and protect programs they put in place prior to the recession."

Verizon offers a Gradual Return to Work Program for employees returning to work after childbirth. This program allows employees to return to work on a shortened work schedule, while keeping complete coverage for all Verizon benefits.
